If you follow me on Pinterest, you've probably noticed the overwhelming amount of velvet couches, industrial lighting, and brick walls that have been populating my feed.  If you aren't following me, you should be!  If you just want to follow my Kansas City Loft Apartment board, that's this one here.

Currently, my living room has a beautiful exposed brick feature wall that houses two very large windows.  To be honest, the brick wall and the location are the two reasons B & I chose this apartment over the 13 or 14 we toured.  But my gorgeous brick wall has its drawbacks:

  • It crumbles.  Seriously, you can hear the little pieces of brick falling off the wall and onto the books that are currently stacked in the corner because we don't have shelves.
  • Without the proper masonry tools it is very difficult to hang anything -- pictures, hooks, curtains; if you can think of something that would be absolutely perfect to decorate the space, it it isn't going on this wall.

That aside, here's what I'm working with:

Ignoring the weird angle, and the fact that an air mattress is serving as our couch at the moment, you can at least see my amazing wall and huge windows and crazy tall ceiling.  It's more than enough space to work with and I have so many ideas (and a tight money to ideas ratio) to work with.

Below are my favorite inspiration photos as I work on assembling my empty living room into a classy cozy comfy space!

So far, the challenge while shopping is staying away from what's "trendy" and making sure to select pieces that we know will go with us from apartment to apartment to starter home and maybe even to forever home.   If you have any favorite stores you'd like to recommend in the comments, I'd love to know about them!

We've only made two purchases that qualify as decor since we've moved.
1. This beautiful poster from Hobby Lobby that we're pairing with this barnwood frame

2. This full-length mirror from At Home that I showed off on my Instagram a few days ago

Let's pretend I posted this last week like I meant to so that we could officially mark our one month in Kansas City!  B & I moved the little bit of furniture that we brought with us in on December 27th, started our new jobs the second week of January, and celebrated one month of cold weather and brick buildings and getting lost last Friday at DMH's Winter Party at the swanky and exclusive River Club.
These are my thoughts so far on being a Kansas City resident.

1.  It SNOWS here!
One weekend we visited a park and actually slipped around on a frozen pond.  If you missed that Snapchat story you really missed out.  For those of you thinking, "yeah, it snows" don't forget we're from Texas so snow is not normal and to us it's pretty cool.

2. ANTIQUES
Whether it's out shopping for furniture and decor or stepping across the street for lunch you cannot get away from the antiques.  Not complaining (and definitely recommending the Genessee Royale)

3.  Food
All of it is good.  All of it is expensive.  Please, visit Il Lazarone in the River Market and tell me it is not your new favorite pizza and beer joint.  And if you're craving barbecue, Jack Stack in the crossroads district is delicious -- order the cheesy corn for sure.

4. I LOVE my new job

Check out Genessee and DMH and see a little of what I do every day.  And just look at this River Club and quirky restored 1930s club called the Ship and tell me it does not remind you of Austin!  Full reviews on the nightlife to come in a later post.

So far, we love it here!  The cold isn't so bitter and we don't miss the humidity at all. There's some bouts of homesickness now and then but phones are magical things!  February has been a busy month for us historically, so I doubt it will be any different this year.

Exciting things happening now that Marriage Year One has drawn to a close.  We have officially put  down a deposit on our future home in Kansas City, MO and have new jobs starting January 2016!

It took a lot of searching to find our new apartment, and a lot of the lofts and historic buildings in the Power & Light and Crossroads districts of KCMO had appeal but we have settled in beautiful River Market.

In River Market we are a stone's throw from downtown, walking distance to the farmers' market and a variety of restaurants and entertainment, and across the street from this gorgeous park!

B and I have visited Kansas City for the past few years on different holidays and have just fallen in love with the city more and more each time.  I even got to experience my first snow "dusting" last week! We've been considering moving from San Antonio for the past few months, but our trip up over Thanksgiving really sealed the deal for us.

For now, we're back in San Antonio coping with the craziness of packing up our apartment for our after Christmas move, planning Christmas celebrations at 4 different houses, and helping my parents move before  Christmas.

Wish us luck!

Instead of trying to get the rest of the crazy California trip (including the boys getting stuck on the mountain and me waiting with my brother for 5 hours longer than originally planned) typed up, we made this video!

My husband likes to adventure.  He spent a week on the Guadalupe River with his best friend, two backpacks, and a canoe -- all of which you can read about here.  Our most recent escapade involved 30 hours in a car to reach Mt. Shasta outside Redding, California.  The car made the trip, barely!
Pit Stop in Arizona
Luckily, B really likes to drive so I didn't have to drive the whole way there (I did have to make up for it on the drive home).

Day 1

Our first full day in California we spent at Lassen State Park hiking to 10,000 feet.  We had to take quite a few breather stops as our Texan lungs adjusted to the altitude, but the view at the top as so worth it!  We forgot to take a picture at the peak, so we snapped this one on the way back down the mountain.

We don't know who the genius is that put this here, but our car had a great laugh about it.

Day 2

Sunday afternoon we headed to Chico, CA to visit the Sierra Nevada Brewery.

We were able to jump onto a last-minute tour, and the boys enjoyed free tasters.  Lucky me, I had forgotten my ID so no beer for me!

Day 3

And now we've come to the point of our trip to Cali: to climb Mt. Shastsa.  Mt. Shasta is a 14,000 snowy-icy climb during the spring and a rocky-sandy climb during off-season.  After a stop in Shasta City to rent helmets and grab breakfast, we drove the Pontiac down a long gravelly dirt road.  Before we reached the trailhead, we managed to navigate through two sandy stretches, but not the third.  Which meant that R & B had to walk the final mile to the trailhead.  No worries! They made it.  Here's the photo from their base camp:

So while the two of them froze during their night on the mountain, I stayed in Redding with my brother for a night of dinner and movies.

Day 4

We were set to pick up B and R at 4pm at the stretch of sandy road I had left them on.  That meant I had most of a day to spend with my brother.  He's interning at the Stirring, so an afternoon of coffee for me!

A photoshoot at a beautiful boutique hotel that requires evening gowns, velvet, and elbow-length gloves? Yes, please!

My shoot with Joe was the result of a last-minute cancellation by another model (and I'm so glad she couldn't make it).  I had two days to pull together a wardrobe, plan my own hair and makeup, and scope out the location: the Menger hotel.  I mean, just look at this victorian lobby!

I had two dresses for this shoot.
1. The gold evening gown by Jim Hjelm Occasions (Style 510) that was rescued from an alterations shop.  I'm not sure if this particular style is still available retail, but Nordstrom does carry the line.
2.  The black velvet evening gown by Dave & Johnny that I picked up at a Goodwill ages ago that has been my go-to New Years Eve dress (that you can kind of see in this photo below).
New Years Eve is for concerts, kisses, and champagne!

I didn't see any on either website that really looked like mine, but I have included some links at the end of this post to dresses of similar fabrics, silhouettes, and/or colors.
Some of my favorite images from our shoot are below.
