Make Your Own Fabric Star Ornament With This Easy Sewing Tutorial

Looking for a quick and easy sewing project? This star ornament is perfect! With just a few simple steps, you can create your own custom fabric star ornament to hang on your tree or give as a gift. Plus, the free star template makes it easy to get started. So grab your fabric and get sewing!
Download your free fabric star ornament template!
You’ll want to make sure you print at 100% to get the full-size star. I also printed a second template page at 75% to make smaller stars so that there is variation in ornament size. Cut out your star and you’re ready to trace!
Gather your materials
You’ll need
– fabric scraps or quilting squares
– scissors – a pair for fabric and a pair for cutting your paper templates
– tape measure
– ribbon
– chalk or a pencil to trace the template. This chalk pen would be perfect!
– sewing machine (or a lot of patience if you’re hand-sewing!) If you’re a beginner like me, this Janome sewing machine is so easy to start with.
– thread coordinating with the fabric you’ve chosen. Color won’t matter too much for most of the sewing because it will be inside your finished star ornament. But for the final stitching, it will be visible.
– pillow stuffing poly fil
Trace & cut out the star template

You’ll want to trace two stars for each final ornament you want to sew. I like them to have different fabrics on the front and back, but you could do the same on each side.
Cut your ribbon
You want 8 inches of ribbon to fold in half for your ornament loop
Pin right sides together
Align the edges of each fabric star with the front of the fabric facing inside. Once sewn, you’ll turn it right-side out so your seams are hidden.
Double over your ribbon and pin with the loop facing down and inside your star, so the two tail ends are sticking out from one of the points when you’ve pinned it. This is so that when you flip your star inside-out at the end, your ribbon will be outside and form a complete loop.
Sew!

Leave a gap at the bottom of the star so that you can insert the stuffing
Trim all the tips of your fabric star

By trimming the tips – be careful not to cut your stitches! – you’re removing the extra bulky fabric that would keep the stars from being pointy when you turn it right-side out.
Turn Right-side out
Using the gap you left for stuffing, turn your fabric ornament right-side out. To help push out the star tips into crisp corners, use something like a pencil eraser or letter opener that won’t tear through the fabric while you poke the corners.
Stuff

That pencil or letter opener will come in handy again to get that stuffing into the very tips of your star points.
Sew the gap closed

You can hand stitch the gap closed using a slip stitch or sew closed with your machine – just know your stitches will be exposed if you do it the second way (which I did).
